Maria Ressa receives UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize

  • Investigative journalist and media executive Maria Ressa of the Philippines has been named as the 2021 laureate of the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, following the recommendation of an international jury of media professionals.
  • The $25,000 prize “recognizes outstanding contributions to the defence or promotion of press freedom especially in the face of danger,” according to UNESCO.

Japan to confer Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays decoration to Bengaluru teacher

  • Bengaluru teacher Shyamala Ganesh, the former director of the Japanese Language School, will be conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays.

Appointments

Mamata Banerjee takes oath as West Bengal CM for the 3rd consecutive time

  • Mamata Banerjee is serving as the 8th and current Chief Minister of West Bengal since 2011, the first woman to hold the office.
  • Mamata Banerjee was sworn as West Bengal Chief Minister for the third time in the shadow of Covid and post-poll violence in parts of the state. The oath ceremony took place with Covid protocols in place at the “Throne Room” at the Raj Bhavan.
  • The rest of the cabinet and the council of ministers will be sworn in on May 9, the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
  • Mamata Banerjee won a landslide victory in the Bengal election to secure a third straight term. The Trinamool won 213 of 292 seats while its strongest rival, BJP, finished second with 77 seats.

MK Stalin appointed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister

  • Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit appointed DMK president M.K. Stalin as the Chief Minister and invited him to form the government in the State on May 7.
  • The DMK has won 133 of the total 234 Assembly seats that went to the polls on April 6. Some more seats were won by allies, including the Congress that bagged 18 constituencies.

BRO’s Project DANTAK completes 60 years in Bhutan

  • The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) said that one of its oldest project — DANTAK commemorated its Diamond Jubilee in Bhutan.

  • The 26-year-old from West Bengal is the second reserve behind Sri Lanka’s Elpitiya Badalge Dona Milka Geh for the Asian quota and became eligible to compete from the zone following the cancellation of the 9th Senior Asian Championships, which was scheduled to be held from May 29-June 1 in Hangzhou, China, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wipro overtakes HCL Tech to become third most-valued Indian IT firm

  • IT major Wipro regained the position as India’s third most-valued information technology (IT) company, surpassing HCL Technologies in terms of market capitalisation (market-cap).
  • Wipro stood at number 12 in the overall m-cap ranking with an m-cap of Rs 2.65 trillion. HCL Technologies, meanwhile, slipped to number 13 with an m-cap of Rs 2.62 trillion.
  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which is at the number one position in IT companies market-cap rank, stands strong with a market cap of Rs 11.47 trillion, followed by Infosys (Rs 5.72 trillion), data shows.

Ex-Union Minister, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Jagmohan passes away

  • Former civil servant and ex-Jammu and Kashmir Governor Jagmohan Malhotra, 94, died in Delhi after a brief spell of illness.
  • Jagmohan served J&K as Governor twice, first in 1984 and later in 1990, when militancy peaked. He was honoured with Padma Shri in 1971, Padma Bhushan in 1977 and Padma Vibhushan in 2016.

Assam’s first female IAS officer Parul Debi Das passes away 

  • Parul Debi Das, the first female IAS officer from Assam, passed away in Guwahati.
  • Parul Debi Das had also served in Meghalaya for a short time in the late 80s.
  • She had retired from service as the Additional Chief Secretary of Assam.

Aeronautical scientist Manas Bihari Verma passes away

  • Aeronautical scientist Manas Bihari Verma died of a heart attack at his native place in Darbhanga district of Bihar. He was 78.
